Driftless Inspired Cooking

My grandmother has always had a talent for giving thoughtful, sentimental gifts, and this Christmas was no exception. This year she surprised me by tracking down a copy of her beloved local cookbook from Lone Rock—one she has been using regularly since 1973. To make it even more special, she highlighted her favorite go-to recipes. It’s a true example of “if it’s not broken, don’t fix it.”

The cookbook, pictured below, was created in 1973 by the Congregational Church of Lone Rock and titled “Old ’N New Family Favorites.” Among the recipes she highlighted was the “Never Fail Pie Crust,” a staple for her pecan and apple pies. Originally submitted in 1973 by Morna Gundlach in memory of Gertie Braithwaite, this recipe has stood the test of time—my grandmother has been using it to bake pies and quiches for over 50 years.

I’ve included the recipe card below, along with a snapshot of her holiday bakes, which tasted just as delicious as they looked!
