Driftless Area Land Conservancy - Wildlife Spotlight: Cerulean Warbler
Speaking of birds, this week we are highlighting the Cerulean Warbler. Why birds, you ask? That’s a great question.
My grandmother has always loved birds. Between her house and cabin near Muscoda on the Wisconsin River, she has set up a dozen bird feeders and water baths. Her cabin, one of our family’s most treasured locations, is where she loves spending afternoons watching the river flow.
On the cabin’s porch, she keeps a well-worn bird dictionary on the coffee table. Watching the wildlife and flipping through its pages has taught me just how many unique species pass through the Driftless Area. Each bird has its own distinct shape, size, and sound, offering endless moments of discovery in nature.
Organizations like The Driftless Area Land Conservancy are doing vital work to protect the unique ecosystems of the Driftless Area, ensuring habitats like those of the Cerulean Warbler are preserved for generations to come.
Meet the Male Cerulean Warbler
The Cerulean Warbler is a rare and beautiful bird occasionally spotted in the Driftless Area. It is known for its striking sky-blue feathers and white underparts - Males display the signature blue coloration, while females feature a softer blue-green hue.
Preferring large tracts of mature deciduous forests, the Cerulean Warbler nests high in the canopy, making it a challenge to spot. During its migratory journey, this bird travels as far north as Canada to breed in the summer and migrates south to the Andes of South America for the winter. In Wisconsin, it’s considered a species of concern due to habitat loss.
Lookers may have luck finding it at Wyalusing State Park or the Lower Wisconsin State Riverway during its breeding season in late spring and early summer. Listen for its rapid, buzzy song—a telltale sign one is nearby.
Spotting a Cerulean Warbler is a rare treat and a powerful reminder of the importance of preserving forest habitats in our region.
