Backroads Series #2 — Highway 60 Between Gotham & Muscoda

The Driftless area is full of roads that do more than get you somewhere; they take you through somewhere. Twisting past river bends, climbing bluffs, and cutting through quiet valleys, these backroads each have a rhythm and a story all their own.

That’s why we started this Backroads Series—a way to spotlight the most scenic, soulful drives in the region, whether they’re well-traveled favorites or tucked-away gems. Got a favorite Driftless backroad? Share it with us using the link below—we’ll feature reader picks in future editions.

——————————

Highway 60 is a Driftless classic. It hugs the Wisconsin River from Prairie du Sac nearly all the way to Prairie du Chien—but the stretch between Gotham and Muscoda is something else entirely.

It starts in Gotham then winds west along the water, past the Orion boat landing, with river views that open wide one minute and disappear the next. Along this stretch you’ll pass Bogus Bluff—a legendary spot with a strange little backstory we’ll cover soon.

This nine-mile stretch is personal for me. My family’s cabin sits just off this road, and I’ve driven it more times than I can count. I learned how to cast a line here. Learned to read the water. Learned to chill out and watch the water here. It’s a road that holds memories - ones I return to every time I take that drive.

So next time you’re planning a drive, head west on Highway 60. Roll the windows down. Stop for a drink at a local tavern in Muscoda—or swing by Wild Hills Winery, a Driftless Tribe Discount Card spot. Let the road slow you down and tell its story, one curve at a time.
