A Pause for Platteville
We had planned to launch a new Cheese in the Driftless series this week—but after the tragedy at UW-Platteville, I felt the need to pause and reflect on a campus and community that means so much to me.
On Monday night, two UW-Platteville students died in a tragic incident in Wilgus Hall. Official reports are still emerging, but it appears both were gunshot deaths, with one believed to be self-inflicted. Finals week has been canceled, and the campus is effectively shut down as the university and town begin to process what happened.
I spent five years at UW-Platteville and graduated many years ago. It’s a special place—small, tight-knit, and full of good people. The campus helped shape who I am today. I have vivid memories of those years, especially my time living in the dorms.
In fact, here’s the view from my dorm room nearly a decade ago (if you look hard enough, you’ll see the Chrysler minivan I drove at the time)
Melcher Hall
I lived just steps from Wilgus Hall for three of my five years on campus. It’s hard to imagine what the students and the community are going through right now. Finals week is always a pressure packed time. To have it marked by such heartbreak is beyond comprehension.
I may not live in Platteville anymore, but my heart is with everyone there.
