Weekly Breakdown
✨ Happy Long June
Summer has officially arrived in the Driftless. This stretch between Memorial Day and the 4th of July is what I call Long June — full of fresh mornings, long evenings, and the excitement of summer is just ramping up.
Long June represents potential. It’s the Friday night of summer: full of optimism & open-ended plans. Come July, people start saying things like, “Summer’s flying by” or “It’s already halfway over.” But Long June? Long June holds no existential dread, just the calm excitement of a season that’s just getting started.
And here’s the best part: if you don’t manage to do anything especially memorable during Long June? You’ve still got two full months of summer ahead to make it count.
We’ll be sharing the best events, local gems, and ways to make the most of the season. Grab your Discount Card and hit the road — adventure is out there.

🍓Driftless Strawberry Rhubarb Pie Recipe
Rhubarb is one of those early signs of summer in the Driftless. It shows up before much else is green, tough enough to handle cool nights and dependable enough to come back year after year. If you’ve got a patch in your yard or a bundle from the farmers market, this pie is one of the best ways to put it to use.
Strawberry rhubarb is a classic for a reason — sweet, tart, and simple. This version keeps things easy with a premade crust and a short ingredient list, so you can spend less time fussing and more time enjoying a slice outside.
Ingredients:
1 box refrigerated pie crusts (2 crusts)
2 cups rhubarb, chopped
2 cups strawberries, chopped
1 cup sugar
¼ cup flour (or cornstarch, if you prefer)
1 tbsp lemon juice
1 tbsp butter, cut in small pieces
1 egg (for brushing crust)
Instructions:
Preheat oven to 400°F.
In a large bowl, mix the rhubarb, strawberries, sugar, flour, and lemon juice.
Press one pie crust into a 9-inch pie dish.
Pour in the fruit filling and dot the top with pieces of butter.
Cover with second pie crust (either full or sliced into strips for lattice). Press edges to seal and cut a few slits on top if using a full crust.
(Optional) Beat the egg and brush over the crust for a golden finish.
Bake for 45–50 minutes, until the crust is golden and the filling is bubbling.
Let it cool for at least an hour if you want clean slices. Or dig in warm and make peace with the mess. Serve with ice cream, whipped cream, or just a fork.
Then sit back, take a bite, and remember — this is what Long June tastes like.
